Overview of Educational Advocacy

Course Description:

Experienced Connecticut Legal Services attorneys will provide participants with a training regarding educational advocacy which may include but is not limited to: an overview of education law and special education law, providing a description of relevant state and federal statutes and regulations; understanding the education system and procedures, as well as Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings; attendance and truancy; rights of homeless students; an overview of individual educational plans; an introduction to 504; alternatives to mainstream education; school discipline; due process and the complaint resolution process. 

There will also be a discussion of recent updates due to the COVID pandemic, with advocacy tips for families and providers working with families. Attorneys will be available to answer general questions participants have regarding education law and advocacy.
